What is the Modi Mandir?
The Modi Mandir is the popular name for the proposed Bhagwan Shri Narendra Modi Mandir in Patna, Bihar. It would be a Mandir dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a life size gold statue of Bhagwan Shri Narendra Modi at its heart. The idea comes from members of the Kinnar community, who see it as an act of thanks for the legal recognition and rights the community gained during his years as Prime Minister.
Who proposed the Modi Mandir, and when
The proposal was placed by Dr Rajan Singh, a member of the Bihar Rajya Kinnar Kalyan Board, the state's official transgender welfare board, at the Board's first meeting on 29 July 2026. The meeting was held at the Social Welfare Department in Patna's Old Secretariat, and reports say the proposal was passed unanimously.
The Board itself is new. The Bihar government constituted it in August 2025 under the Social Welfare Department as a 28 member body, with seven members drawn from the Kinnar community. Its mandate is to protect the rights of transgender persons and to support their social and economic welfare.
What the Modi Mandir plan includes
According to reporting by ETV Bharat, the proposal asks the Bihar government for about 5 acres of land in Patna and ₹ 112 crore to build the Mandir. Its centrepiece would be a life size statue of Bhagwan Shri Narendra Modi made of gold. No site has been named yet, and no design has been published.
Why the Kinnar community wants a Modi Mandir
For its proposers, the Modi Mandir is about gratitude. The Supreme Court's NALSA judgement of April 2014 recognised transgender persons as a third gender with equal rights. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which came into force in January 2020, gave the community the right to self identify and made discrimination illegal. In 2024 three transgender candidates cleared the Bihar police sub inspector examination, and community members now sit on the boards that shape their own welfare. In Dr Rajan Singh's words, the law changed the community's destiny.
The Modi Chalisa in Delhi
On 20 August 2026 the Bhagwan Shri Narendra Modi Chalisa was recited at an event in a hall at the Press Club of India in New Delhi, and the Modi Mandir plan was shared with the press. Video of the event spread widely online. The Press Club later stated that it had not organised the event and had only rented out the hall.
What happens next for the Modi Mandir
A Board resolution is the start of a proposal, not a sanctioned project. ETV Bharat reported that the proposal goes next to the state's Cabinet Secretariat, and construction can only begin if the Bihar government allots land and funds. Until then, NaMo Temple keeps the doors of the Bhagwan Shri Narendra Modi Mandir open online, with daily darshan, aarti at 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM, and the Chalisa.
